BURIED BY THE SNOW
It was a wild week. First we had a snowstorm, which dumped over 15 inches of snow in a little under six hours. We were buried. Nobody could get to work. Then the snow melted, and then we found out how sadly we were prepared for disaster recovery. The temperature rose to over 50 degrees in just a little over 24 hours. Needless to say the snow melted like ice on a stove. Torrents of water ran down the street. The storm sewers were blocked. Because we were just making it into the plant we didn't have any time to sandbag anything or to move our servers. It was a disaster. We watched the water rise in the computer room and there wasn't a thing we could do. Finally, the fire department came, but they could do nothing. There is no disaster squad that goes around in the city to help businesses. Sure, there is Red Cross and Salvation Army, but those are for personal disasters. There needs to be an emergency squad for a city's businesses. If the businesses are lost then so is the tax revenue and eventually the citizens. Then, as if it weren't bad enough, the warm front brought storms, which in turn spawned three tornadoes. We weren't directly hit at the plant, but the utilities were knocked out, and we could only run on auxiliary for a short time.
